It’s that time of year when we start those niggling DIY jobs around the house and clear away the clutter. Spring is a great time to give your home a good, honest clean – the weather is warming up and you can finally open up all the windows to let in some fresh air and pave the way for a fresh and healthy house.

Through organising your home, you’re also cleaning up your mind and life. That’s how I like to see it! When you live in a clean, uncluttered space your mind should also be free and clear. It’s a win-win.

Want to make your home and health sparkle this spring? Follow these easy tips and foolproof strategies to get there in half the time.

1. Pillow swap
Question: how long have you been sleeping on that pillow of yours? Can you recall the last time you bought a new one? If not, it’s time for a change. While you’re busy stripping the bed of thick woollen and electric blankets, think about swapping over the pillows, too. Look for pillows that contain natural materials, such as down, wool, organic cotton or natural latex.
2. It’s time: turn your mattress!
Flipping your mattress regularly is essential, not only for prolonging the life of the mattress but for assuring you continue to get a good night’s sleep and protect your back.

3. Hang ’em high!
When the weather’s nice outside, hang your bedding in the sun for three hours to eliminate most dust mites, mould and mildew.
4. Simplify before you beautify
Clothes benefit from regular review. Most people only manage to wear a fraction of what they own – which effectively means that most of the space devoted to clothes storage is redundant. Celebrate the start of the new season with a wardrobe overhaul. Get rid of clothes that are out of fashion, no longer fit or are irreparably stained or damaged. We all start the day in a rush; by being more organised we are saving time hunting for the right work outfit, allowing more space in our schedule for ‘me time’ activities (a morning work-out, 20 minutes of meditation, a cup of tea and toast in your pyjamas).
5. Freshen up your space with plants
Not only do house plants look lush, they can also help to improve air quality in the home. Some house plants absorb toxins, including Volatile organic compounds (VOCs), formaldehyde and benzene, which could be floating around in your home.
6. Open the windows
Instead of spraying a synthetic, chemical-based air freshener that works by disguising smells, open the windows every day and use baking soda (simply place the powder in a bowl, or mix a little with water and wipe over a surface) to absorb and neutralise the smells around your home.
7. Switch to pure cleaning power
We’re using too many chemical cleaning products! Most dirt and stains will respond to an armoury of simple solutions and household minerals. Find the full list of natural cleaning productshere.
8. Start a vegetable garden
The time to plan and plant your vegetable garden is now. Watch it grow and thrive with plenty of water and sun. If you live in an apartment or feel you don’t have enough space for a vegie patch, create your own kitchen garden instead.

9. Move your work-out outdoors
Now that the weather is warmer, get outside for fresh air and to exercise. Studies have shown that exercising outdoors is better for you; the positive endorphins released through exercise combined with being surrounded by sunshine and the elements will contribute to a happier you.
